INTERNATIONAL LABOUR ORGANISATION (ILO)
ILO has a unique structure, bringing together governments, employers and workers representatives to “promote rights at work, encourage decent employment opportunities, enhance social protection and strengthen dialogue on work related issues”.
- To establish International Labour Standards (Conventions & Recommendations) related to industrial safety, occupational health, labour welfare
- To provide technical assistance for carrying out programmes of social and economic development.
- To collect and disseminate information on labour and industrial conditions
- It advocates and works for the protection of Human rights.
- The ILO also assumes a supervisory role: it monitors the implementation of ILO conventions ratified by member states
- Registration of complaints: The ILO registers complaints against entities that are violating international rules. But does not impose any sanctions on the governments.
- Promote and realise standards and fundamentals principles and rights at work
- Create greater opportunities for women and men to secure decent employment and income
- Enhance the coverage and effectiveness of social protection for all
- Strengthen tripartism and social dialogue.

Ratification (giving formal consent) is a sovereign (independent) act of a member state of the ILO expressing the state’s intention to be bound by the terms of an International Labour Convention. Protocols can be ratified together with the Convention with which they are associated or after the ratification of that convention.
